The Ecological Problem

A Time Bomb Waiting to Happen

hands-holding-small-tree-dirt.jpgThe world scientist' warning to humanity starts by saying "Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course." It goes on to point out many serious life threatening problems caused by our wrong atitude towards nature, problems which could doom our civilization, perhaps all life on earth. Even this powerful Statement is probably a conservative assessment of the health of the world today, one that pulls some punches, because it had to be written so that all of the scientists could agree to it. They are conservative by nature, and want to protect their reputations and academic standing. The truth may even be worse than they have put in writing and signed their names to.

In any event , there now seems no doubt that, in addition to the continuing problems of nuclear weapons, war and political repression of all kinds, humanity has a critical environmental problem with:

    • The Atmosphere
    • Water Resources
    • Oceans
    • Soil
    • Forests
    • Living Species
    • Human Population

All of these areas are addressed by the Scientists' Statement. If you haven't already done so, we suggest you read it now. We also suggest you read the new book Asking for the Earth by James George (Canadian Ambassador) with a preface by the Dalai Lama. We also suggest you read the statement made by spiritual leaders who attended the Rio conference. They share the inner side of ecology, the need for attitudes to change for the environment to be saved. Wisdom and Ecology go hand and hand; in these times one without the other dooms both to failure.

In addition to the environmental problems we have a related problem with the extinction of aborginal cultures, and minority cultures. We need to preserve cultural diversity, otherwise much of the wisdom from the past will be lost to future generations.

Now as to solutions, we don't have many yet, but we do have a few and we are wide open to suggestions for more. The first step, it would seem, is to realize the need for action, consciousness raising. The Environment - Metapolitics part of this web is designed to begin to do just that. Remember, it is not too late to save life on this planet. Don't give up! The facts are scarry, its true, but use your knowledge to help spur you to action, not to slouch down to defeat. All other life on Earth is counting on us.

A big part of the solution is to add the spiritual dimension to the environmental movement. We have to change ourselves at the same time we work to try and reverse all of the disasterous trends identified by the scientists and other so called "alarmists." One problem with the environmental movement so far is that it seems to be based on fear. We can add an even more powerful motivator - Love and the virtue of COURAGE. Fear is a great motivator, but its not our way. Love is, better, but only with courage. Courage is what we feel we need to emphasize now - that is, knowing the facts, how close we are to the verge of extinction, but courage not to be petrified by the fear, to overcome the fear, and act in spite of it. That's courage. Courage based on love so as to overcome fear, not be attached to fear. To ignore the facts, to not know the good cause for fear, is hiding, escapism. Love without knowledge is not nearly as helpful as love with knowledge, triggering courage to act. Love without knowledge, the good cause for fear, without overcoming fear, and replacing it with courage, can never be powerful enough; it is blind, empty.

Specifically, we have already started a project: the "Meta-politics" we have going now is to try and save the Dagara tribe in West Central Africa from extinction from draught caused by western imposed agriculture. We join with two prominent Dagara spokemen, Malidoma and Sobonfu, to help them raise money for materials so the Dagra people can build resevoirs and dig wells to save themselves. That is described in Water and the Spirit to Act. This project has quickly grown into a true community effort and is now supervised by our own 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, Echoes of the Ancestors, Inc., with members through out the United States. Visit this site and learn more about our activities. Then join us and help make a difference. Remember, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem!
